Moby Dick Essay Example for Free
Moby Dick Essay Melvilles Moby Dick is widely recognized as one of the most complex and brilliant allegorical novels in American literature. As an allegory, the events, places, people and conflicts depicted in the novel represent not only the obvious surface-level elements of the novel, but stand as indications of the novels philosophical and metaphysical themes. The allegory of Moby Dick involves an examination into the nature of reality and also into the nature of good and evil, as defined for Melville partially by Americas Puritan heritage. Melville wanted to portray the essence of evil in a symbol, which was the whale, Moby Dick. When Ahab says All visible objects, man, are but as pasteboard masks, (Melville) he is echoing the allegorical construction of the novel in which each thing, such as the whale, Moby Dick, is merely a pasteboard mask (Melville) which hides the true essence beneath, an unknown but still reasoning thing (Melville) which puts forth the mouldings of its features from behind the unreasoning mask (Melville). For Ahab, the white whale is the mask which disguises truth and the revelation of the nature of reality. In this sense, the white whale becomes a symbol for whatever it is that holds mankind back from the perception of absolute reality. Ahab emphatically reveals his Platonic beliefs when he says If man will strike, strike through the mask! How can the prisoner reach outside except by thrusting through the wall? To me, the white whale is that wall, shoved near to me. Sometimes I think there`s naught beyond. (Melville) In this sense, the whale represents oblivion, the naught beyond which in Ahabs mind is plainly associated with death. It is toward the heart of the nature of reality that Ahab strikes with his blood-sealed harpoon, not merely a fish in the ocean. For Ahab the white whale represented both ultimate reality and the wall which separates man from ultimate reality. Ahabs view of nature and reality is that the visible world and all of the events, people, and actions in it are indicators of deeper, more profound, metaphysical ideas and experiences: when he hunts the white whale which represents evil and oblivion, he is hunting the absolute nature of evil, not merely one of its beasts. The intense hate that Ahab feels for the white whale helps to distinguish Ahabs view of reality as presented in the novel form the vision of reality Melvile was trying to establish by way of the allegory of the novel. While Ahab believes the white whale to be the symbol of evil, Melvilles depiction of evil through the allegorical structure of Moby Dick is shown, ironically, through Ahab himself and not through the symbol of the whale. Instead, for Melville, the whale symbol indicated the cosmic universe and was exhaustively related through his use of cetological detail and science. In this way, Ahabs obsession and hate are shown to be a tragic flaw along the lines of some of Shakespeares heroes, after whom Ahabs dialogue explaining his motives for hunting Moby Dick are clearly derived. As Ishmael gains a closer, more intimate apprehension of whales, the development of his character and spiritual insight are correspondingly elevated. The more detailed are the cetological experiences and catalogues, the more wholly expressive and self-possessed and sure becomes Ishmael. Still deeper correspondences between the cetological material and Melvilleââ¬â¢s narrative form are established in Ishmaelââ¬â¢s descriptions of the whales ââ¬Å"blubberâ⬠and ââ¬Å"skinâ⬠which he posits as being indistinguishable. This is reflected in the narrative structure of ââ¬Å"Moby Dickâ⬠where it is equally as difficult to apprehend where the ââ¬Å"skinâ⬠(overt theme and storyline) of the novel ends and the ââ¬Å"blubberâ⬠(cetological and whaling discourses and catalogues) begin. Melville makes it perfectly clear that the ââ¬Å"blubberâ⬠is an as indispensable part of his novel as it is for the whaleââ¬â¢s body. ââ¬Å"For the whale is indeed wrapt up in his blubber as in a real blanket or counterpane; or, still better, an Indian poncho slipt over his head;â⬠(Melville) therefore, too, is the expository material, the ââ¬Å"blubberâ⬠of the novel wrapped around its central, allegorical aspects. The detailed cetological aspects of ââ¬Å"Moby Dickâ⬠may, indeed, prevent the reader from an easy, and immediate grasp of the novelââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"meaningâ⬠or even its astounding climax. Just as the whaleââ¬â¢s hump is believed by Ishmael to conceal the whaleââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"true brainâ⬠while the more easily accessed ââ¬Å"brainâ⬠know to whalers is merely a know of nerves, the secret ââ¬Å"coreâ⬠of ââ¬Å"Moby Dickâ⬠can only be pursued with patience and close, deep ââ¬Å"cuttingâ⬠due to the organic and harmonious nature of its narrative form. By keeping in mind the previously discussed aspects of the relationship between ââ¬Å"Moby Dickââ¬â¢sâ⬠comprehensive cetological materials and their symbolic relationship to the novel itself, its form and themes, Ishmael, while discoursing on the desirability of whale meat as fit food for humans, offers an ironic gesture toward the novelââ¬â¢s probable audiences. ââ¬Å"But what further depreciates the whale as a civilized dish, is his exceeding richness. He is the great prize ox of the sea, too fat to be delicately goodâ⬠(Melville).

The Ancient Regime :: essays research papers
The Ancient Regime The Old Regime took place during the fifteen hundreds and are conflicted by the enlightenment in the middle seventeen hundreds. The Old Regime thoughts and ways are different politically and economically then the enlightenment world. The Old Regime thoughts are based upon God and the church. The people believed that God was the ruler of everything and God was what makes things happen and work. People of these times had no concepts of science or reason. People believed that things happened because God made them happen. If you had thoughts that were different than that you had to answer to the church and there could be serious penalties to pay. During the period of the Old Regime, there was no other governing other than the church, which caused serious conflicts for the monarchies of this time because there was a constant battle over the power of the people, and who was going to rule over them. The church had the entire rule and the kings of these times would have to discuss with and go through the churches before they could make any decisions. The reason that they had given so much power to the church was out of fear. The thrown was afraid of making God angry so they would do anything in their power to keep God and the church satisfied. One way of making sure God was happy was to give the power to the church, this included money or taxes that were collected. Women's role in society was hardly important to the people of these times. Women in this time were not thought about very highly. They were thought of and treated as property. Women had it hard in these times, because men were so intent on their superiority over the women. There were hardly any times that women were rulers. In the late fifteen hundreds a man named Francois Hotman wrote Francogallia which is his best known work. In this work he discusses women and how he thought of them. He implied that they were not fit to be rulers or even contribute to the thrown. He discusses some of his occurrences with women rulers and how they all seemed to demolish what they had been given, and every thing ended up in destruction including their thrown. Religion was a very serious subject in this time, since everything revolved around God and the church religion was the largest part of people's lives.

Jesus Christ and Miracles Essay
A miracle is basically an event that cannot be fully explained by science and sometimes defies logic and reasoning. Generally, miracles are attributed to positive things such as a person suddenly being cured from devastating or a person waking from a deep coma after a lot of years. However, miracles are also attributed to persons and possibly the best person whom miracles are associated with is Jesus Christ. According to Wikipedia, Jesus Christ performed many miracles which include curing the sick, exorcising demons from people, controlling nature, and raising dead people, among others. Moreover, possibly the most popular miracles that Jesus performed based on Wikipedia are the turning of water into wine, the exorcism of seven evil spirits from Mary Magdalene, the healing of the mute, the blind, the deaf, and the leper, walking on water, the multiplication of small amounts of fish and bread, the raising of Lazarus from the dead, the transubstantiation of bread and wine, and his own resurrection from the dead, among many others. Basically, according to Wikipedia, Jesus performed miracles in order to show everyone that the divine power of God, His Father is real. In addition, the general view of the Catholic Church according to Wikipedia is that Jesus mainly performed miracles not only to help those who are in need but to convert non-believers into believers. However, according to Wikipedia, modern analysts of the Bible claim that miracles that Jesus performed were merely symbols and metaphors. For example, healing the blind served as a symbol for people who could not see the truth even though it is presented clear on their faces and healing the dead was a metaphor for people who could not or refused to listen to the truth. Nevertheless, the prevailing perception still is that miracles are the good, yet improbable things that happen in a personââ¬â¢s life and that Jesus Christ is the main performer of these miracles Works Cited Wikipedia. org. 2008. ââ¬Å"Jesus. â⬠12 April 2008 .

Stress And The Human Brain - 1720 Words
When we encounter a threat that we feel we do not have the resources to deal with, a stimulus known as stressors are released and as a result, makes us stressed. These stressors activate the stress-response system which sends a cascade of biological events thus releasing the stress hormones known as adrenaline and cortisol. The hormones cause our body to go into a ââ¬ËFlight or Fightââ¬â¢ mode and can affect us either positively or negatively. By going into flight or fight mode our blood pressure, breathing, and heart rate increases meanwhile there is a decrease in digestive activity and the liver produces more glucose for energy. The topic of stress is a very popular area of study for those interested in human sciences. In particular, stress is often viewed through the scopes of a Psychologist, Sociologist and an Anthropologist. The Psychologist s perspective revolves around relations between stress and the human brain. One of the questions they might ask would be if an individual can be born with stress. The answer is sometimes but not often. Researches at the University of Edinburgh found that motherââ¬â¢s wombs and babies brains contain a chemical protecting them from a mother s stress. However, if this chemical is unavailable, then the mothers are potentially exposing their unborn babies to stress. The study also discovered that the babies exposed to stress in the womb tend to be more susceptible to anxiety and depression. Life At Home Recovering Before It Is Safe For Resume Work
Many times after injuries or medical procedures, one is required to spend time at home recovering before it is safe to resume work. In the Army, this recovery leave is non-chargeable and a physician decides the length of recovery. The first form of leave is called quarters and is typically 24 to 36 hours. Quarters is typically prescribed to soldiers that have infectious diseases such as the flu. When a Soldier is given quarters they must stay at home in order to mitigate the spread of the disease and to allow them to rest and recover. The second form of medical leave is called convalescence leave. Convalescence leave is prescribed by a physician following a surgical procedure to allow a soldier to recover and is also non-chargeable.â⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Probably one of the biggest aspects of the Armyââ¬â¢s Total Compensation plan is the free medical coverage provided to all soldiers. I cannot think of another organization that offers a totally cost free medical pac kage for its employees. Also, as I mentioned earlier, the leadership in the Army is very supportive of soldiers attending medical appointments in order to maintain a high level of medical readiness, which is a critical aspect of the Army being able to conduct its mission. Soldiers do not see a physician when they are injured or ill initially. The first line of medical screening includes unit medical personnel, which includes medics and the unit physicianââ¬â¢s assistant. If it is determined that the soldier will require treatment or diagnosis from a physician they are then referred to a doctor. This is a key way that the Army saves money on its no cost medical coverage. By not having a soldier be seen by a physician immediately and having a lower ranking medic, who gets paid much less, conduct the initial assessment and possibly remedy the situation, the Army save substantial money. Of course, if a soldier is critically injured or ill they can always go to the military ins tallation emergency room for treatment or call 911 for assistance. Alcohol and Smoking
Question: Discuss about the Alcohol and Smoking. Answer: Introduction: Alcohol and smoking are prevalent in the society today. The condition is shown to be very addictive to the users who often suffer from the status till death. Many abusers of the alcohol and substance often have health complications which are responsible for the suffering of the addicted individuals. The state has called support from the Palmerston Association centres across the country to help mitigate the situation. Although efforts to control the use of the drug among the citizens by the government have been made, there is still much to be done to monitor the condition actually, in particular among the addicted individuals. Alcohol and smoking have been the cause of many sufferings in the society (In Kaye, In Vadivelu In Urman, 2015). Primarily the drugs and alcohol have affected the health conditions of the individual. The aim of the health organization has been to help the addicted person get rescued from the health difficulties caused by the alcohol and cigarettes. The essay ou tlines the processes and the professionals involved in the control of the health conditions. Many countries in the world estimated to be around 50% of the countries in the world have established Palmerston Association centres that serve as the rehabilitation areas of the affected individuals where there are psychologists who provide guidance and counselling services to the addicted people. A study was conducted in one of the clients of the health officers who also were a victim of the condition. The research entailed interviewing a person and requested to know his perception of the health status and the services that are offered (In Crome, In Wu, In Crome In Rao, 2015). The person opened revealed how he had entered the condition without knowing; he said he was introduced into the act by friends while in school which affected his academics than he decided to quite the scholars. The program offered at the centre includes the art and craft work program that has a beneficial result on the lives of the victims. He began engaging in some smaller businesses which also failed becau se he was often drunk and unable to manage his business well. His family was affected financially and health. He expressed through tears how his only daughter died from anaemia a condition that resulted from his action. He decided to go for the rehabilitation process. The health centre offers education services majorly advise the victims on how they can manage their conditions. He said he is improving his condition unlike some two years back he had continuously been admitted to the hospital for many other diseases. The study further performed some research through the use of the questionnaires had been prepared to the diverse age groups across the country. The researchers collected the information and combined it with information had been gotten from the books which have written on the similar topic (Hoffman, San Fernando Valley Bar Association Versa-Tape Company, 2015). The information shows how the condition has affected the victims negatively. It is the cause of many deaths and poor living conditions in the country. The role of the psychologists in the Palmerston Association centres is to help the individual to be emotionally active and made proper decisions because many people according to the research, abuse the alcohol and smoking because of stress. Counselling and group work programs that are offered at the centre. In addition to the presence of the psychologists in the Palmerston Association centres, there are also the doctors of different specialties who deal with their various sections. The health officers perform a full treatment process as in the health standard setting in which the operations, the tests are performed just like the normal process. There is also the connection with the relevant police offices which act in collaboration with the health centres and provide the required security and the help in providing order in the treatment process (In Wodarski in Curtis, 2015). The Palmerston Association centres provide the necessary medical services to the individuals to ensure that the health condition of the people is restored. The education services are provided by the respective trained officials who are expected to educate the victims on the value of about the need for a balanced diet in the life of the victims. The guidance and counselling department also work with the Palmerston A ssociation centres to ensure that the victims are counselled, and their conditions are fully settled (AreaÃÅ'Ã n, 2015). The counselling program starts with testing the diseases, performing the operations if any, the victims are then taken to the psychologists who need to identify any effects on the brains of the individuals through their methods of evaluation. The victims are then treated but restrained from accessing the drugs. The victims are taken through counselling sessions to advise them to change their behaviour through the vocational training programs. According to the research, 60% of the victims have responded positively to the practices offered at the Palmerston Association centres. Many victims who were almost beyond salvage are rescued from the additions. Many individual confess that the practice from the health centres is useful in the bid to control the growth of the addiction population in the country. The practice has also enhanced the reduction of crimes in the country through the management of the drug abuse practices (Keith, 2015). The approach has received approval from the various government and non-governmental organizations which encourage the continuity of the practices. The spread of the diseases in the country has reduced. Nonetheless, there is more that need to be done to ensure that the active participation in the calming community as the chief focus programs are offered, firstly, the government has to increase its financial support to the centres. People need to encourage taking the practices seriously and joy fully and offering their support. References AreaÃÅ'Ã n, P. A. (2015).
